Step 1: Prepare the soil
Choose a soil mix suited to your plant type (e.g., cactus mix for succulents, general-purpose potting soil for most houseplants).
If the soil is dry, moisten it slightly by mixing in a small amount of water. The soil should be damp but not soaking wet, as this helps the roots adjust to the new environment.
For added nutrition, you can mix in a bit of organic compost or slow-release fertilizer, but this is optional depending on your plant’s needs.
Step 2: Prepare the new pot with fresh soil
Add a layer of fresh potting soil at the bottom of the new pot. This base layer will give the plant new nutrients and support its roots.
Step 3: Remove the plant from the old pot
Hold the plant gently at the base of its stem and tilt the pot to slide the plant out. If the plant is stuck, tap the sides of the pot or use a tool to loosen the soil around the edges carefully.
Step 4: Place the plant in the new pot and add soil
Center the plant in the new pot on top of the layer of fresh soil. Add more soil around the plant, filling up to about an inch below the rim. Gently press the soil down to secure the plant but avoid compacting it too tightly.
Step 5: Water the plant
Pour the water slowly and evenly across the surface of the soil to ensure all areas are moistened. This prevents water from pooling in one spot and allows it to soak into the soil properly.
Avoid dumping a large amount of water all at once, as it can wash away the freshly added soil or create air pockets around the roots.
